Home Front is a twice-weekly deep dive into the rising—and returning—trends, decor, and teeniest of design details fresh on our radar. Last week, Lindsey, Domino’s digital director, got ready to cut the (lamp) cord.

In May, we put out a Home Front poll asking what you wanted us to cover next. Not to brag, but my personal contribution to the list—mini portable lamps—eked out the win with 28 percent of the vote. Which means this newsletter is dedicated to all the cordless cuties I’ve encountered since the style popped up on my radar back in 2019-ish. Let’s do this.

I say 2019 because that’s when Hay came out with its iconic bell-shaped PC lamp, one of the first portables I remember taking note of. That same year, &Tradition’s now-ubiquitous Setago light hit virtual shelves. Fast-forward to 2024, and little rechargeable lamps are only getting more distinctive. We’ve already been graced with a fluorescent orange take, a playful painted steel creation, and a mini mountainous delight made of mycelium. A take-anywhere light source feels particularly useful for my new it’s-almost-summer ritual with my husband: sunset dinners on the patio after we put the baby to bed.

On Board

Photography by Cody James; Styling by Merisa Libbey

It’s impossible to pick a favorite, so here are nine more I’m eyeing:

  1. Middle-of-the-night baby wake-ups have got nothing on this washi paper lantern, which has a handle for easy toting from rocking chair to changing table.
  2. I love how Schoolhouse put just as much attention into the design of the bulb as the rest of this space age–y light. (Psst: There’s a round option if the diamond isn’t for you.)
  3. Forgoing a cord typically means missing out on dimmability, a nonnegotiable for good vibes. Luckily, Lulu and Georgia is two steps ahead and smartly incorporated a brass knob.
  4. Our Friday night pizza tradition would be positively elegant in the company of this slender table topper—the opaque shade directs light downward for a restaurant feel at home.
  5. Honestly, the shape of this creamy matte one is so striking, it looks just as good off—let it be sculpture. But if you do turn it on, the charge should last 12 hours.
  6. Rather than mar the plywood-clad ceilings in her living room with hardwired lighting, creative director Bethany Brill relies on the soft glow of a coffee-table lamp.
  7. The finial on this shiny, candylike light is for more than just looks—it’s how you turn it on and off or adjust the brightness, all with a tap or press of a finger.
  8. Okay, this U.K.-made lamp is totally out of budget, but I’m a sucker for the traditional bone china shade paired with playful powder-coated metal.
  9. For whatever reason, most cordless lamps look nothing like their wired counterparts. Audo’s rechargeable version of its standard Torso style, however, is a third the size but has the same linen shade and ceramic base.

Perhaps you’ve spotted these cord-free cuties in the back garden of a favorite restaurant, that moody cocktail lounge around the corner, or your coolest friend’s impeccably decorated patio. Portable table lamps are seemingly everywhere lately—which makes sense for a light that’s designed to go anywhere you do. Unlike candles that burn down or blow out, these LED-equipped vessels offer a reliably rechargeable glow that will outlast the longest of alfresco festivities. If you, too, are tempted by the cozy glow cast by portable table lamps, consider our top picks for setting the summer scene. As an added bonus, many of our chosen favorites work just as well sitting on a nightstand or nestled into a bookshelf as they do illuminating the open night air.

Minimal Lamps for the Modern Home

While each of these lamps is outdoor-friendly, it’s pretty easy to imagine them coexisting with your indoor decor. Not to mention that, in certain spots around the house like a coffee table or floating shelf, a cord is the last thing you want to see. And when you’re hanging outdoors after the sun’s down, you’re all set.

Personality-Filled Lamps That Pack a Punch

Spring is all about embracing color and having fun, and that’s exactly what these punchy picks bring out. Their small size won’t stop them from making a bold statement; place &Tradition’s Setago lamp on a coffee table and it becomes the centerpiece of your living room. We don’t always play favorites, but we’re partial to Pooky’s Walter lamp, now available in the U.S.

Utilitarian Lamps That Light Up Your Dinner Party—And Your Camping Trip

Outdoor-friendly portable table lamps aren’t a new thing—we’ve been using lanterns for decades. But we can pretty much guarantee that what you’ll find at a sporting goods store will be less cute than these. Many of them can hang from a tree, which is a laid-back version of a pendant lamp. Balmuda’s is dimmable, taking you from moody candlelit to light and bright.

Our polished picks start at just $40.

Lighting can make or break a room—accent fixtures set the mood for romantic weeknight dinners, dim ultra-low for Netflix marathons, or make it easy to read in bed. To add a ceiling light or wall sconce, you likely have to hire an electrician. For a table lamp, you need an empty surface such as a nightstand. But a floor lamp? All it requires is a square foot of floor space, which most of us have.

Even better, the style is versatile enough to illuminate any nook or cranny: where you read, where you work, and even a dark hallway. But the well-made lookers can be pricey, and it takes time and energy to sift through the category to find the hidden gems. We took the plunge and came up with task masters, fabric shades of all sorts, natural materials, and modern takes aplenty—all under $500. Read on for our top picks of each type.

Task Floor Lamps

From a reader-favorite dimmable pharmacy style to a 61% off arched option and other marked-down pieces, these are proof that budget floor lamps don’t have to be cookie-cutter.

Traditional Floor Lamps

Give a corner a classy look with one of these traditional styles—there are brass finishes, fabric shades, and swing arms. We’re particularly fond of the Thomas O’Brien–designed Beckham model from Visual Comfort, but Brightech’s arched number, spotted in RHONY star Brynn Whitfield’s Manhattan apartment, is a worthy runner-up for looking more expensive than it actually is.

Wicker and Raffia Floor Lamps

Wicker and raffia both lend texture and materiality to a space, whether that’s in a piece of furniture or, as is the case here, a lampshade or base.

Modern Floor Lamps

Whether you’re going all in on the mushroom trend or looking for a conversation starter, modern floor lamps offer everything from streamline silhouettes to quirky touches.

There’s even one for just $12.

When it comes to finishing touches, few things have the potential to simultaneously add warmth and character to a space like accent lights do. From nightstand lamps that lend a soft glow to industrial-chic task lamps that spark productivity, this is one decor purchase worth splurging on—though the good news is you don’t have to.

Allow us to introduce affordable lighting’s greatest hits: chic table lamps under $100, in a multitude of styles. There’s the futuristic army of sculptural glass lamps, a raffia-wrapped one with tropical vacation vibes, and a $12 IKEA desk option that’s less than a foot tall. All budget-friendly, all guaranteed to zhuzh up your home with a click of “add to cart.” (Psst: If you’re all set on indoor lighting, our portable lamp roundup has plenty of under-$100 options for your backyard and beyond.)

Ready to make your space a bit cozier? Ahead, the best under-$100 table lamps for every design aesthetic.

Of the Natural World

When in doubt, go natural. Earthy materials like raffia, wood, and wicker make these picks everything from Scandinavian minimal to coastal grandma—starting with this $25 Amazon option that looks more like a vintage score.

Ultra-Mod

From bulbs to cubes to squiggly blobs, these finds will bring both a sculptural element and ambient glow to your space. We’re eyeing Amazon’s simplistic tripod lamp, offering clean, contemporary lines for just $23.

For Getting Down to Business

These desk lamps make work a little more fun—especially H&M Home’s squiggly design with a built-in tray. But the real score has to be this $22 Amazon find, so affordable you might as well add it to your cart along with your toothpaste and paper towel haul.

A Pop of Color

Because blending in may not be your vibe, we found a few eye-catching lamps that stand out in the crowd. Adding one of these to a room is an easy and affordable way to pack a punch.

Take It Outside

Some lamps really can do it all: These picks can be taken from your nightstand to your picnic. Chargeable, portable, and cute as can be, we love anything that keeps an alfresco party going into the night.

A hard truth about small-space decorating strategies is that they often involve sacrificing your wildest design dreams (RIP, sectional with an extra-deep chaise). But there are some pieces I’d keep small even if I had all the square footage in the world, such as very tiny table lamps. The mini table lamp trend is about more than the cute factor of a pint-size home piece; it can be particularly handy for creating mood-boosting lighting during the darker winter months. While larger lamps require valuable real estate and electrical outlets, minis are often portable and can be scattered around on mantels, bookshelves, windowsills, coffee tables, bar carts, or even your kitchen counter (they won’t hog your prep space). And with multiple light sources at different heights, you’re well on your way to creating effortless layers of that coveted ambient glow.

While perhaps I already have far too many lamps, I say there’s always room to squeeze in another (tiny) one. I’ve been a proud owner of Thomas O’Brien’s Tiny Terri lamp for a year—as far as I’m concerned, it’s straight out of the designer’s home. It sits atop my armoire, fitting right in with my indoor garden.

There’s no shortage of petite table lamps on the Internet; all of the picks, below, are well under a foot tall. With rechargeable options that allow you to skip the cord and mushroom-shaped nuggets for less than $18, it really is hard to resist buying at least one.

This $40 Amazon Portable Lamp Belongs in a New York Cocktail Bar https://www.domino.com/style-shopping/amazon-obright-cordless-lamp/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 17:16:00 +0000 https://www.domino.com/?p=314881

After a cozy fall evening out, we’re often left wondering how we can bottle up that ineffable vibe and bring it home for the holidays. When looking to classic Manhattan establishments for direction (hello, Bemelmans), there’s one key accessory on the table: tiny lamps. But cordless mood lighting that skews traditional or elegant as opposed to modern is hard to find—unless you’re willing to invest in pricier designs, that is. That’s why this surprising under-$50 Amazon gem caught our eye. O’Bright, the brand behind a reader-favorite pharmacy task lamp, recently dropped a portable style that, thanks to its linen shade and antique brass base, looks like it belongs in a posh New York cocktail lounge.

O’Bright’s Seraph table lamp is all about movable ambiance rather than stationary task lighting. Powered by a rechargeable battery (via USB-C), its LED bulb delivers three dimmable settings (20%, 50%, and 100% brightness)—a crucial feature that makes it easy to shift the mood during your next dinner party with the press of a button. The only caveat we could spot is that instead of the 48 hours the brand claims it should last, most reviewers report the timeline is closer to 10. But here’s why that’s easy to overlook in this case: Most portable styles we’ve come across online are metal from top to bottom (exhibit A and B). The fact that this one is capped with a fabric drum makes it look decidedly more dignified, which is exactly what you want if you’re aiming to channel the Carlyle’s iconic old-fashioned charm.

O’Bright Seraph Cordless LED Table Lamp

While the reviews so far are slim, it’s now the number-one release in table lamps on Amazon. Plus more than a couple of comments that are accompanied by an in situ image are enough to convince us that it comes just as pictured (or, as one reviewer points out, even “nicer than the pictures.”). “This is a great lamp for the price,” one shopper writes, adding that they’re fans of its under-cabinet-friendly size. Another reviewer shares, “I used this lamp on a small table between two chairs where there is no electrical outlet.” Others offer that it looks just as smart situated on a bedside nightstand, entryway console table, and kitchen counter where plug-ins are hard to come by.

More Classic Cocktail Bar Accessories

To really lean into that classy New York bar aesthetic, pick up a few other accessories to complete the look. Our favorites include staples such as roll-top bowls you can fill with olives or citrus; trios of snack dishes primed for fancy nuts and truffle potato crisps; delicate martini glasses and cocktail trays.

Our philosophy is that if your WFH desk is beautiful, the work you create will likely be, too (even if that just means a slightly more elegant spreadsheet). One of the fastest, simplest ways to make your area more stylish is by simply upgrading your desk lamp. Proper task lighting gives you the ability to work whenever inspiration strikes and will be a statement piece. But if the idea of online shopping for your office makes you yawn, we’ve got you: These are the 22 best desk lamps across a spectrum of styles and price points. With these pieces, you won’t need to burn the candle at both ends—or be left in the dark.

Adjustable Desk Lamps

With just a little rotation, many of these utilitarian picks can shift from a spotlight on your keyboard to an ambient upward glow. They bring a scholastic vibe that, in our opinion, encourages wildly productive work sessions. And if your lengthy to-do list gets you down, the rainbow colors of Anglepoise’s mini desk lamp are guaranteed to boost your spirits.

Nontraditional Desk Lamps

If adjustable task lamps are the most standard style, then consider these the complete opposite. From a powder-coated steel sheet base inspired by Luis Barragán Morfin’s architecture to oversize dimmable bulbs, they’re ideal for those seeking something a little more unconventional.

Modern Mushroom Desk Lamps

The ’70s are inarguably in vogue, and no article channels the groovy decade like a mushroom lamp. Offering a more even glow than your typical task lamp, these can move around your home as you redecorate, topping everything from a nightstand to a console. We’re especially crushing on &Tradition’s flowerpot design; the rare pale sand hue borders on butter yellow.

Multifunctional Desk Lamps

Desk lamps can help you see the task at hand, but that’s just the start of what these offer. IKEA’s doubles as a Sonos speaker, Lulu and Georgia’s has a USB outlet, and Crate & Barrel’s and DWR’s are charging pads. Warning: These might ruin all other table lamps for you.

Super-Natural Desk Lamps

Some metal desk lamps can feel a little cold, but these are sure to bring a heavy dose of warmth (not to mention coastal grandma) to your workspace. Wicker shades also happen to diffuse the light beautifully, making for a moody glow.

Pro Tips for Styling a New Desk Lamp

  • Accessorize with art: A poster or painting hung above your desk will help balance the height of your lamp and provide a nonscreen visual for your eyes to rest on.
  • Mix and match: Consider the material or color of your lamp and make sure there’s at least one other item on your desk that mirrors it, like an aluminum light paired with a metal pencil cup.
  • Know your angles: Place your lamp opposite your writing hand so you won’t cast a shadow across your work.

Our Shopping Checklist

Brightness and Wattage

When it comes to lighting, you really just need to know the difference between watts and lumens. The higher the number of lumens, the brighter the light. The higher the wattage, the more power the bulb uses. Look for energy-efficient LEDs or CFL (compact fluorescent) bulbs, which use low wattage while giving off high lumens, ideal for a well-lit desktop area.

Design

Trends may come and go, but when choosing a light, “it’s important to have a beautiful object you’ll like for many years and one that can serve multiple needs,” says Line Borella of Danish design studio Hay. Don’t just picture how this lamp will look on your current desk; also envision how it will grow with you and fit into your next space. And make sure the lamp of your dreams also functions the way you need it to. A simple way to assess this is to consider the two main parts of a lamp: the body and the shade. A stationary body can look more elegant, while an adjustable body provides more range and flexibility. If the shade is opaque, it will provide focused, downward light to a consistent area, while a translucent shade (either fabric or frosted glass) will cast diffused light in all directions.

Smart Compatibility

It turns out you don’t have to be a tech wiz or electrician to outfit your home with smart lighting; just add a smart plug or smart bulb. Connect your light to a smart plug (which fits in any standard outlet) and you can control your lamp from your smartphone with an app like Apple HomeKit or via another connected device like Amazon Alexa or Google Home. You’ll be able to turn lights on and off no matter what room you’re in or even put your lights on a timer when you’re not around. Want to have some fun and be able to change the color of your light? Pick up a smart bulb and you’ll have a rainbow of hues to choose from based on the time of day and the mood you’re in.

Reading up on Domino’s shopping guides is like having your own personal product concierge. We do the tedious part—deep-dive research, hands-on testing, and tapping experts for advice—so all you have to do is hit “add to cart.” That’s why we call them Simply the Best.

If you’re in the market for a new ceiling fan, rest assured that today’s models have come a long way from their fusty forebears. “Those ugly grandma ceiling fans—you know, the wood ones with frilly lights and dangling chains—are a thing of the past,” says Erin Hiemstra, founder of Apt. 34. There are types to suit any and every decor style, from farmhouse to modern and rustic to contemporary, not to mention every space inside (and outside) of your home.

These days, in addition to standard indoor options, you can buy outdoor versions for covered patios and wet-rated fans designed for direct exposure to rain, says John Alexander, CEO of Hunter Fan Company. To infuse a breath of fresh air (and flair) into your home, we combed the market to find the best ceiling fans, making your shopping experience a total breeze.

Our Favorites

Best Wood: Pottery Barn Spitfire Ceiling Fan

Speed settings: 3 | Dimmable: No | Size: 48, 60 inches

The Best Ceiling Fan Option: Pottery Barn Spitfire Indoor Outdoor Ceiling Fan
Spitfire Indoor/Outdoor Ceiling Fan, Pottery Barn ($495)
Shop

Why we chose it: Contemporary blades made with wood.

With six wood-blade finishes, including white, black, natural, and driftwood, and options ranging from galvanized to dark bronze for the motor cover, this fan offers nearly endless opportunities to mix and match in a modern way. We’re guessing that’s why it has become known as a popular best-seller. Our editors love the clean-lined minimalist look that features just three blades. It’s damp UL listed, which means it can handle a fair share of moisture, so you can install it indoors or out. Have a need for speed? This one also goes in forward and backward directions for your preferred flow.

Best Compact: Honeywell Ocean Breeze Ceiling Fan

Speed settings: 3 | Dimmable: No | Size: 30 inches

Honeywell Ocean Breeze Ceiling Fan
Ocean Breeze Ceiling Fan, Honeywell ($70)
Shop

Why we chose it: A petite fixture that’s surprisingly efficient at moving air.

Described by multiple reviewers as a “great little fan,” this pint-size pick is just 30 inches, making it ideal for small spaces like powder rooms and nurseries. And that doesn’t make it any less powerful. One shopper swears it moves as much air as another fan they own that is twice its size. Three combos of reversible blades let you choose your own adventure—light oak or satin nickel; dark chestnut or light oak; white or maple—and then switch things up if you get bored. But the blades aren’t the only things that are reversible: The motor offers an updraft mode to warm up the room in the winter and a downdraft mode to cool things off come summer.

Best Color: Hunter Dublin Ceiling Fan

Speed settings: 3 | Dimmable: Yes | Size: 44 inches

Lighting photo
Dublin Ceiling Fan, Hunter ($250)
Shop

Why we chose it: A conversation-starting statement.

As if plucked straight from the crayon box, the Dublin offers unique palette choices like dusty green and indigo blue to add a subtle pop without going over the top—a vibe even color-phobes can get behind. Funky plastic blades are quiet (it’s “almost silent” according to one shopper) while still looking cool, and the low profile means it’s an ideal fit for lower ceilings.

Best Minimalist: AllModern Cairns Ceiling Fan

Speed settings: 3 | Dimmable: Yes | Size: 52 inches

AllModern Cairns Ceiling Fan in all white
AllModern Cairns Ceiling Fan, Wayfair ($290 was $507)
Shop

Why we chose it: To seamlessly blend in with your white ceiling.

On the flip side, there are plenty out there who’d prefer a ceiling fixture that all but disappears. In that case, you’ll want to opt for AllModern’s Cairns. It ships with everything you’ll need, including the downrod, so making an extra trip to the hardware store will not be required, thank you very much. With a 52-inch blade span, this definitely isn’t a small choice by any means, but its all-white silhouette makes it the opposite of an eyesore. “Sleek, quiet, and easy to install,” one reviewer summarizes. Another adds, “Good-size fan without taking over the whole room.”

Best Modern: Hunter Cranbrook Ceiling Fan

Speed settings: 3 | Dimmable: Yes | Size: 52 inches

Hunter Cranbrook Ceiling Fan
Cranbrook Ceiling Fan, Hunter ($247)
Shop

Our editors are big fans of the mid-century modern design and five fun colorways that this one comes in, including powder pink, mint green, and light gray; each is paired with tapered blond wood blades. A dimmable, high-efficient exposed LED bulb gives you total control of the lighting. The low-profile mounting fits flush against ceilings less than 9 feet high.

Best Versatile: Fanimation Zonix Ceiling Fan

Speed settings: 3 | Dimmable: Yes | Size: 52 inches

Fanimation Zonix Ceiling Fan
Zonix Ceiling Fan, Fanimation ($446)
Shop

Why we chose it: Plenty of choices when it comes to finishes.

You may only need it for one room, but we love that this model from Fanimation would work for many spaces. Mounting options range from flush to 72-inch downrods and six sizes in between, and finishes are aplenty—think: matte black, matte gray, brushed nickel, matte white, and dark bronze. The simple silhouette satisfies most decor styles, and it can be installed with or without the LED light.

Best Techy: Big Ass Fans Haiku

Speed settings: 3 | Dimmable: Yes | Size: 52 inches

brown and white ceiling fan
Haiku Smart Fan, Big Ass Fans ($729 was $850)
Shop

Why we chose it: For the smart home owner.

Thanks to Wi-Fi connectivity, Alexa and Google Assistant compatibility, and app control, our experts agree this fan is a supersmart choice (really, even for the name alone). You can change fan speed and lighting levels, set preferences, schedule routine operations, and enable different modes like “eco” right from your smartphone. Choose from bamboo or aircraft-grade aluminum blades, which come in 10 finishes such as driftwood, oil-rubbed bronze, and brushed copper. Best of all, there are seven airflow speed settings to suit every which way your wind blows.

More Ceiling Fans We Love

How We Chose These Products

When we put together our list of ceiling fans, we wanted to stick to simpler styles that are versatile, made with durable materials, and quiet. They got bonus points for being potentially outdoor-compatible and Energy Star rated. Above all, we believe that this ceiling fixture should be a balanced blend of form and function—the best-designed products reflect your personal style and are a joy to use. We also paid close attention to reviews and editor- and expert-given advice to make sure these pass the test IRL.

Our Shopping Checklist

Controls and Settings

Modern fans offer really easy touch-button control, Hiemstra says. “I like having at least three speed settings that give you plenty of options for air movement,” she adds. Control systems are really a matter of preference. Simple ceiling fan controls rely on a wall switch that lets you turn the fan on and off, and adjust the speed with a pull chain. More advanced ceiling fan systems allow you to control the fan’s settings from a wall control or handheld remote. Then there are the smart iterations. “Hunter, for example, has a SIMPLEconnect smart home line of fans that are Wi-Fi enabled and compatible with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa, which can be controlled with an app on your phone,” Alexander says.

Lighting Options

Fans with lighting give a room central illumination. “The number of bulbs a ceiling fan features influences the ambience of the space,” Alexander says. Ceiling fans with single-bowl light kits are ideal for bedrooms, offices, kitchens, and living rooms, which require medium-level ambient lighting. For spaces where no other lighting is provided, fans with multi-arm lighting are a great option—these often feature three to four bulbs, depending on their design. The multiple bulbs spread light across the space, brightening the entire room, Alexander says. “Functional single-source lighting provides a space with overall illumination; in spaces where your primary goal is to accentuate decorative elements, a ceiling fan with an integrated downlight kit creates a clean and sophisticated look that won’t overpower the other lighting in the room,” he says. When looking for ceiling fans with lights, Alexander suggests checking for integrated light-dimming features. “Ceiling fans with dimmable lights allow you to set the mood in your space. Wall controls and handheld remotes make the process of adjusting your lighting easy, too,” he adds.

Installation and Mounting

How high you hang your fan depends on the height of your ceiling. Ceiling fans should be mounted 7 feet from the floor for optimal air circulation, Hiemstra says. Flush-mount fans (meaning the fan is hung right up against the ceiling) are intended for rooms with a ceiling height of around 8 feet or less so the blades hang at a safe distance overhead, Alexander says. Standard ceiling fans, which usually come with a 6-inch downrod, are designed for a room with a ceiling height around 8 to 9 feet. “For sloped or vaulted ceilings exceeding 34 degrees, a sloped ceiling adapter kit must be used to ensure proper ceiling fan installation,” Alexander says. This type of adapter replaces the ceiling fan canopy (the bowl-shaped covering that hides the wires between the ceiling and the fan).

Ask Domino

Q: How do I choose the right size ceiling fan?

The number of blades you choose really comes down to style preference; what matters most is the total diameter of the fan. “The amount of air circulated by a ceiling fan is determined by its diameter,” explains Alexander. Generally, larger rooms require fans with larger diameters, while smaller spaces require fans with smaller diameters. He advises using fans ranging from 30 to 48 inches in rooms under 100 square feet, such as laundry rooms and powder rooms. For rooms under 400 square feet, such as bedrooms and kitchens, fans ranging from 48 to 54 inches work best. For larger rooms, open-concept spaces, or lofts, ceiling fans 56 inches or larger are ideal.

Q:  Do ceiling fans use a significant amount of electricity?

The short answer: No, they don’t, especially when compared to air conditioning units. “Adding a ceiling fan can help your home feel up to 6 to 8 degrees cooler, so you won’t be tempted to run your AC as much in the summer,” says Alexander. “By creating a draft in the room, your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard and you can save up to 47 percent on cooling costs.”

“If every household in America turned on their ceiling fan and turned up their air conditioner just 4 degrees for the entire day, together we could save nearly $13 billion in energy costs this summer alone,” says Alexander. Experts also recommend considering the CFM measurement when buying a fan. “This stands for cubic feet per minute and refers to the measurement of how much air is moved by a ceiling fan,” he adds. “More energy-efficient ceiling fans produce higher airflow while consuming less energy than standard fans.” Also, look for the Energy Star label—these fans move air 20 percent more efficiently, on average, than standard models.

There are a lot of things you shouldn’t attempt to do in the dark, cooking being one of them. Fortunately, kitchen lighting has come a long way from standard recessed cans. Now you can add LED strips under upper cabinets, display giant dome pendants over the island, and set everything on a dimmer. The issue is that all of these updates require you to call an electrician, which can be costly and prolong your timeline. But there is one exception: table lamps.

Just because you’re accustomed to seeing them in the living room or on a nightstand doesn’t mean one can’t live on your countertop next to your coffee machine or up high on an open shelf. While the placement is unexpected, these types of fixtures can make a kitchen feel so much homier—and it gets you out of paying a professional to rip open your ceiling. Read on for a few bright examples and our picks to get the look.

Create a Reading Zone

Don’t shove your lamp in the corner, where it will serve little purpose. Keep it closer to the cooktop or wherever you store your cookbooks. A double-pull chain makes it supereasy to switch it on and off.

Plug It on the Island

There are no supersize dome pendants hanging over Athena Calderone’s Amagansett, New York, island, but a lamp with an exaggerated wicker shade makes up for the drama. Turn to this solution when all your ceiling fixtures are along the perimeter of the room.

Carve Out a Cozy Corner

Treasured cutting boards, greenery, little trivets, and a patterned lamp bring this otherwise wasted nook to life.

Brighten Up a Tiny Space

white apartment kitchen

Even in the tiniest of kitchens, there is always room for a table lamp. New York City dweller Anna Page brought her small space to life with a ceramic fixture, artful utensil vessel, and a painting mounted via Command strips.

If you don’t have a spare lamp on hand to dedicate to your cooking space, then consider snagging one of the solid options, below.

Reading up on Domino’s shopping guides is like having your own personal product concierge. We do the tedious part—deep-dive research, hands-on testing, and tapping experts for advice—so all you have to do is hit “add to cart.” That’s why we call them Simply the Best.

Good lighting works like magic. Think about it: The best floor lamps have the power to completely change not only the look of a room—altering the appearance of paint, fabrics, finishes, and more—but an entire mood with the mere flick of a switch. When chosen well, they can turn a cramped den into an intimate reading nook or make a windowless home office feel expansive.

Finding the right floor lamp starts with assessing your needs. For instance, do you want to feel relaxed or energized? A drum shade diffuses a warm glow that’s perfect for evening hangouts, whereas a directed, pharmacy style can more sharply illuminate an area for last-minute work tasks. Whether you’re searching for a multiglobe option or a tubular statement piece that deserves to be the center of attention, we found 10 standout designs to help you find your light.

Our Favorites

Best Value: Walmart Rattan Metal Floor Lamp

Black Metal Floor Lamp with Rattan Shade
Better Homes & Gardens Black Metal Floor Lamp with Rattan Shade, Walmart ($89 was $99)
Shop

If space is hard to come by, snag this statement piece that offers the best of both worlds. It features a skinny pole base that can be snuggled into a corner of the most packed living room. Its woven rattan shade prevents the bulb from casting too harshly while still promising to bathe the room in a warm glow. “Looks way more expensive than what it actually cost,” one reviewer writes. Another adds, “I cannot say enough positives about this floor lamp. It is quite tall, was easy to put together, and has a floor button you can step on to turn it on! It’s unique in its shape and the stand is very sturdy. Highly recommend.” Plus at less than $100, you really can’t beat the price.

Best Dome: Novogratz x Globe Electric Brass Floor Lamp

Matte Brass Floor Lamp, Double On/Off Pull Chain
Novogratz x Globe Electric Matte Brass Floor Lamp, Wayfair ($137 was $160)
Shop

For focused, downward light, look for a metal dome-shaped shade. Buyers sought out this collaboration between Novogratz and Globe Electric for its retro-revival look, which we see fitting right at home in a dark library or moody office corner. And two pull-chain switches (used to control two bulbs, not just for looks!) deliver an Art Deco vibe without the vintage price tag.

Best Industrial: Anglepoise Type 75 Floor Lamp

Type 75 Floor Lamp in Yellow Ochre
Anglepoise Type 75 Floor Lamp, Design Within Reach ($420)
Shop

A fresh take on an industrial icon, modernist fans are sure to fall in love with Sir Kenneth Grange’s 2004 update of the Type 75 floor lamp from the ’70s. Beyond brushed aluminum, this one stands out on the list for its bright colorways of saxon blue, sienna, and (our personal fave) yellow ochre. Not to mention, its sleek, adjustable frame provides users with the flexibility to switch quickly between task and ambient lighting.

Best Tubular: Regina Andrew Detroit Happy Floor Lamp

chrome tubular floor lamp
Happy Floor Lamp by Regina Andrew, Lulu and Georgia ($788)
Shop

Tap into the tubular trend with this curvy design by Regina Andrew Detroit. The sculptural silhouette comes in a natural brass, oil-rubbed bronze, or polished nickel finish, but paired with white bulbs, it will always deliver a hint of contrast. Style it with a sleek curved sofa or an acrylic table for a reflective effect. And a discreet clear cord fully allows this statement maker to shine.

Best Rattan: Studio McGee x Threshold Floor Lamp

Floor Lamp with Tapered Rattan Shade Brown
Studio McGee x Threshold Floor Lamp with Tapered Rattan Shade Brown, Target ($102 was $170)
Shop

Love the look of Gubi’s iconic Pavoo Tynell lamp, but not so much its splurge-worthy price tag? For a more affordable natural accent or touch of organic texture, why not try Studio McGee’s take on rattan for Target? The tapered, angle shade is punctuated with brass accents, and we love how the woven material extends to the cord. “Such a designer look for a great price,” one shopper summarizes.

Best Multilight: CB2 Pavo Champagne Brass Double Floor Lamp

CHAMPAGNE BRASS DOUBLE FLOOR LAMP
Pavo Champagne Brass Double Floor Lamp, CB2 ($449)
Shop

Fun, stylish, and practical, this fixture works double duty by pairing both an upward and a downward semi-sphere metal shade to achieve an extra-elegant glow. But that’s not the only differentiating detail—its adjustable, asymmetrical base is wrapped in a real leather cord that’s sure to age gracefully.

Best Arc: Brightech Logan Arc Floor Lamp

brightech arc line
Brightech Logan Arc Floor Lamp, Amazon ($140)
Shop

Fit this angled lamp with an adjustable arching range behind an extra-large love seat or to create a contemporary focal point in your living room. And no need to worry about the tall, thin arm from tipping over—a heavy marble base will keep it in place. The one caveat: It comes with a superbright bulb; consider switching it out with a lower-watt LED option to soak up softer light.

Best Paper: Noguchi Akari 9AD

noguchi Akari 9AD
Akari 9AD, Noguchi ($600)
Shop

There may not be a more illustrious paper lamp design than an Akari light sculpture, first fashioned by Isamu Noguchi. This particular piece is a little shorter than your typical floor lamp—hitting closer to hip height—but it’s made to stand on its own. The traditional bamboo ribbing and simple metal frame are elevated in the Akari 9AD with an additional blue detail.

Best Scandinavian: IKEA Evedal Floor Lamp

Floor lamp with LED bulb, marble/gray
Evedal Floor Lamp, IKEA ($360)
Shop

When we first discovered IKEA’s Evedal, we had to do a double take. The overall sleek silhouette, featuring mouth-blown glass, solid oak, marble, and brass, makes it a covetable gem at the mega-home retailer. We’ve spotted it across social media and various homes ever since.

Best Pharmacy: Amazon Brass Pharmacy Floor Lamp

brass pharmacy lamp
O’Bright Dimmable LED Pharmacy Floor Lamp, Amazon ($75 was $90)
Shop

Pharmacy lights have been specifically tapped for working, reading, and writing—and this particular piece features a dimmer for controlled light-level illumination, no matter the task at hand. We first spotted it in YouTuber and affordable decor finder Kiva Brent’s home. Not only does it look far more expensive than it actually is, it boasts a 360-degree swivel and adjustable height. No wonder it was a best-selling product in January.

Our Shopping Checklist

Switch Types

The switch is pretty integral to how a floor lamp functions in a space—if it’s one of your main light sources, you’ll want easy access with a foot switch, but if it’s for lending a softer glow while reading, reaching up to turn a rotary switch or pull-chain shouldn’t be a problem. Either way, Domino contributing editor Benjamin Reynaert notes that a dimmer is key. “It’s imperative that you put a dimmer on a floor lamp to control the light,” he says. “There’s nothing worse than an overbearing light source in a room at night.”

Shades

Lampshade shapes are numerous and varied—from round to angular and everything in between—but the most common can be narrowed down to drum (a curved cylinder), dome (a semi-sphere look), and rectangular (or square). They’re not purely decorative; each shade type and fabric (paper is more transparent, whereas burlap is a bit opaque) impacts how light is dispersed throughout a room. But if nailing the right size or material feels a little overwhelming (we got you), stick to this one simple rule Reynaert picked up from a colleague: “One should never see the lamp socket or hardware at eye or camera level, so make sure your lampshade isn’t too short!”

Design

A master at mixing different light sources and styles, Reynaert also recommends keeping scale and proportion in mind, particularly when it comes to the heft of a piece—you don’t want a large base to overpower your space or dwarf a neighboring chair. And remember, shades are interchangeable; just be cognizant of your selected swap. “A skinny, tall lamp might require a smaller empire shade, whereas a wide, bulbous lamp might need an oversize drum shade,” advises Reynaert. Or go the custom-made route to give a budget-friendly floor lamp a new lease on life.

Ask Domino

Here, Reynaert offers his advice on how to find the right light, including his latest, must-see floor-lamp discovery.

Q: What type of floor lamp gives the most light?

It depends whether you want a targeted task light or an overall glow. For reading, I prefer a pharmacy lamp positioned at a lower height to focus the light. A glass globe or semitranslucent shade is best if you want to illuminate the whole room.

Q: What is the ideal wattage for a floor lamp?

I prefer to hang out in a space with soft white light, so I tend to opt for extremely low wattage—40 watts is enough in most instances. That said, if you don’t have a lot of natural light, you might need to use brighter bulbs (around 60 watts) or layer the space with sconces, table lamps, or pendant lamps.

Q: What are the next lighting trends to know?

Floor lighting is becoming more and more sculptural, as it should be! And pieces that feature colored glass are standing out in the market right now. Newcomers such as Green Blue Works are creating incredibly beautiful sculptural glass lamps, which add another dimension of reflectivity and can be a focal point in a room, versus receding like many other floor-lamp styles.
