You’ve heard people talk about swapping out their throw blankets and pillows for fresh options as a new season approaches. But while everyone else is fussing over their sofa, you’ll find designer Shea McGee toying with her table lamps. For her fall Target collection, she has introduced a large assortment of mix-and-match light fixtures. Specifically there are six base and six shade styles, and they’re all completely interchangeable. “From a simple tapered shape to a playful gingham print and scallops, it’s easy to find the perfect look for any room,” the designer shared on Studio McGee’s site

Really, you can’t go wrong with any arrangement. The idea is to purchase your favorites and, when you tire of their initial placement, move them around. It seems like a small thing, but a quick shade substitute can totally change the way you see a room. Here are a few of the pairings we love the most.

For a Cottagecore Moment

The brown gingham pleated shade will pick up the muddy olive green tones in this ceramic base nicely.

For Year-Round Beach Vibes

Turned wood chairs and wicker tables are beach house staples. Combine them in a single lamp form and you can get that feel-good energy for way less.

For a Nook in Need of Curves

If a shelf or console table is looking stiff and you can’t quite figure out why, it might be because there’s not enough shape or texture happening. Pairing this scalloped shade with a faux wood ball base will solve for boring corners.

For Classing Up a Bar or Nightstand

When a streamlined taper shade and an ultra-thin brass base meet, they look like they belong on the table of a fancy restaurant.

You won’t often hear Nate Berkus speaking about big-box retailers. Instead you’ll find his most common descriptors are things like “1950s Italian,” “1880s Louis XV style,” and “mid-century French.” When he talks about his personal design heroes, he rattles off such names as Angelo Mangiarotti, Alberto Giacometti, Axel Einar Hjorth, and Gae Aulenti. That’s because when Berkus wants to make a home feel truly special, he shops vintage.

Naturally, 1stDibs asked the interior designer to curate a list of some of his favorite pieces on the online marketplace. In honor of Pride month, Berkus honed in on items listed by LGBTQ+ sellers. Meanwhile, the company will be making a donation to nonprofit advocacy group Housing Works, which provides funding and lifesaving services to those affected by HIV/AIDS and homelessness.

Throughout the month of June, Berkus will be spotlighting 30 of his top finds. Here’s a look at some of his selects so far and why he picked them out from the crowd.

Folding Screen 100 Designed by Alvar Aalto

This “terrific architectural staple,” as Berkus calls it, recently made its way into one of his projects in Massachusetts. But if this divider gets snapped up soon, never fear: They’re all over 1stDibs. Depending on the condition and what year it was produced, you can get one for closer to $6,000.

Giovanni Offredi for Saporiti Dining Chairs

There’s something sporty about the sledlike base of these sleek chairs, but the cream-colored upholstery isn’t for the faint of heart (or those with little ones present at the dinner table).

Cast Resin Plaster Dado Table Lamp

white lamp
Cast Resin Plaster Texture Dado Table Lamp, Kacper Dolatowski, 1stDibs ($3,250)

One ingredient to a great entryway, according to Berkus, is a good lamp—even better if said fixture doubles as a stylish sculpture, like this geometric resin one.

Duanye Hatchett Abstract Painting

black and white painting
Huge Mid Century Modern Texas Artist Abstract Expressionist Action Painting (1992) by Duanye Hatchett, 1stDibs ($7,899 was $9,750)

Berkus’s designer husband, Jeremiah Brent, previously revealed to us that when the couple searches online for art, they use terms like contemporary, mixed medium, transitional, and geometric. This piece by Duanye Hatchett meets their basic requirements.

Neoclassical Wrought-Iron and Bronze Bench

white bench
Neoclassical Wrought-Iron and Bronze Bench, France 1950s, 1stDibs ($9,500)

We know exactly what it was about this bench that caught Berkus’s attention: The iron and bronze base is designed in the style of Alberto Giacometti.

Large 19th-Century English Pine Cupboard

Large 19th-Century English Pine Housekeeper’s Cupboard, 1stDibs ($11,875)

We can see Berkus situating this freestanding cabinet against a wall clad in antique mirrors, much like the ones in his NYC dining room.

Mid-Century Modern Lacquer Waterfall Nesting Tables

red nesting tables
Mid-Century Modern Lacquer Waterfall Nesting Tables – Jean-Michel Frank Style, 1stDibs ($4 was $5,880)

Jean-Michel Frank has always been one of Berkus’s favorite designers. “The simplicity of these tables in his style would work in any room,” says the designer.

Hermès Victoria 43 Travel Bag

black bag
Hermès Victoria 43 Travel Bag, 1stDibs ($3,040 was $3,800)

Black and tan is one of his go-to color combos because it’s both classic “and yet not supercommon. The Victoria has always been a great value in comparison to other Hermès styles. And you can fit a lot in it!” shares Berkus.

Gold Leaf Mirror Classical Shape

There are already seven active offers on this gold leaf-plated bentwood and plaster mirror, and we only have the squiggly decor trend to blame.

Burgundy Glazed Chinese Pottery Jardiniere With Ram’s Horns

Burgundy Glazed Chinese Pottery Jardiniere With Ram’s Horns, 1stDibs ($1,590)

Leave it empty or fill it with a fern—either way, this pot is a star. Plus Berkus is a sucker for this color and a ram motif.

“This rough-hewn French Brutalist–style bench works easily in so many locations: the Alps, at the beach, or in Ohio,” Berkus suggests.

Despite its higher price tag, this Brutalist-inspired dresser is already sitting in two customers’ carts, probably because it’s a lifetime investment. The piece is crafted from solid hardwood, leather, and brass.

IKEA is well-known for its furniture, excellent tableware, and meatballs—but a hidden gem among them all has always been its textiles. For more than 80 years, the Swedish superstore has sold fabrics in all kinds of vibrant patterns, and starting in July, it’s adding 20 new ones in a collection called Tyg.

Courtesy of Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2024

The 100% cotton, precut rectangles come at a tempting price ($10 to $15 for 59-by-118 inches), but the eternal question remains: What do you even do with a bolt of fabric? Thankfully, IKEA has thought of that. The brand has offered up several brilliant ideas for using the textiles around the house, no matter your sewing level. In fact, some don’t require a needle and thread at all. Here are our three no-sew favorites.

Instant Art

Courtesy of Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2024

All you need is a stapler and a blank (or not) canvas to create one-of-a-kind wall art. Just cut the fabric to cover a piece of foam board, stretching the cotton tight along one side and stapling the edges to the back. Repeat until all four sides are secure.

Better Boxes

Courtesy of Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2024

Storage never looked so chic. Armed with your fabric, scissors, and glue, you can transform shoeboxes (or even books!) into beautifully covered objets. Honestly, it’s not that different from wrapping a present.

Orderly Walls

Courtesy of Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2024

Apply fabric glue to one end of a fabric rectangle and roll it up around a wood rod. Use the glue to add pockets in a contrasting textile, then tie two cuttings to the ends of the rod to hang your organizer on the wall with a big bow.

It’s a homeowner rite of passage: Within the first few weeks of moving in, after having spent most of your life savings on this house, something will go wrong. The water heater will go kaput, the basement will flood, or you’ll hear little critter feet scurrying in the attic. Cue the flying cash emoji. It’s not a great feeling—especially if you’re a first-time homeowner, as home services marketplace Angi’s latest report reveals.

In its survey of 1,000 recent homeowners, 19 percent say that unexpected costs were the most surprising thing about owning a home, and 43 percent of the youngest respondents (18-to-24-year-olds) were uncomfortable with how much they had to shell out on home maintenance.

But while Angi found that first-timers are more likely to invest in a home project early on, 30 percent have regrets—specifically about the kitchen. Forty percent of the remorseful wish they’d remodeled the space right off the bat. Other top projects they would’ve gotten out of the way: painting, new flooring, and a bathroom renovation. If you’re in the same boat, we’re here to remind you that there’s plenty you can change about your current kitchen while you save up for a total transformation. Here are three in-between updates to consider:

Forgo Cabinet Doors Entirely

Are your cupboard fronts a style that no amount of paint can improve? In Leanne Ford’s first iteration of her guesthouse, she kept things charmingly bare bones, hanging gingham curtains in place of cabinet doors.

Board Up Your Backsplash

One day, creator Emily Jane Lathan’s London kitchen will become a bedroom. Until then, a mini makeover is tiding her over. Covering up the uneven plaster walls with tongue-and-groove MDF sheets instead of a typical tile backsplash helped Lathan keep the budget under $4,000.

Give the Hardest-Working Hardware Some Love

Fresh knobs and pulls are a game changer, but don’t overlook the inner workings of your cupboards either. Wildflower Home blogger Marynn Udvarhelyi swapped the old exposed hinges in her kitchen with hidden ones that also happen to be soft-close.

We love this classic checked rug because it bridges so many different interior styles: Renaissance glamour (seriously—ballrooms were often anchored in the print), ’90s vibes (thanks, Vans), and so much more.

The slight ombré of this hand-loomed textile is downright sophisticated (and more than $1,000 off). It’s a design you won’t notice as soon as you walk into a room or outdoor space, but it plays an even more important part: setting a solid base for vibrant art and sculptural furniture.

A Worthy Classic: Washed Linen Duvet Cover

Invest in a nice set of linen sheets, and you will thank yourself again and again. This supersoft European flax duvet cover promises to feel lived-in from the first snooze (in the best way possible). It’s a smart choice for the summertime, especially for hot sleepers, as the material is incredibly breathable.

A Lamp With Attitude: Studioilse Floor Lamp

This mono-texture lamp is a look in the same way your best friend’s monochromatic outfit is—chic, seemingly effortless, and oh-so put-together. It’s completely wrapped in woven paper cord and just the design you want peeking out of a corner that’s been empty for months.

For Cozy Summer Hangs: Pedestal Firepit

Weathering Steel Pedestal Bowl Firepit, Anthropologie ($515 was $698)

There’s nothing that will turn your backyard space into a hub for hangouts quicker than a firepit. The weathered finish of this bowl-shaped version means you won’t have to worry about it withstanding the elements, and the storage space for wood is extra handy.

The Perfect Pop of Pattern: Annika Reed Studio Temple Wallpaper

Picture: a sad little corner, devoid of design or knickknacks because of its diminutive size. Suddenly it’s transformed by a slick of this Greek-inspired wallpaper and a pedestal for a beautiful vase of flowers or your latest travel souvenir. Just an idea.

A Designer Touch: Amber Lewis Caillen Dining Chair

chair
Amber Lewis Caillen Dining Chair, Anthropologie ($400 was $698)
Shop

We love the texture play happening with this dining chair. Linen meets leather meets oak—it’s luxurious but also reads laid-back. Replace your entire corral of seating or go for a mix-and-match look and find siblings to complement this beauty.

The Anywhere Bench: Sedona Bench

bench
Sedona Bench, Anthropologie ($800 was $1,098)

Ottoman, reading perch, end-of-bed hub for yesterday’s clothes, a perfect place to put on your shoes—the versatility of this bench is worth noting. The geometric pattern on the upholstery is eye-catching, but it won’t detract from any existing interior styles.

Earlier this year, a few months after our first HTH x Domino collection debuted, I was sitting at chief creative officer Kate Berry’s dining room table among a pile of fabric strips. Berry was literally piecing together the initial color combo of what would become just one of the four brand-new styles in our stripe-filled collaboration, which launches today.

Arriving just in time for outdoor entertaining, the latest assortment—shot on location on Shelter Island in New York—spans tablecloths, table runners, napkins, placemats, tea towels, tissue box covers, and pillows (petite and standard), ranging from $38 to $325. And like the first collection, it’s the bold, saturated shades that give these designs the Domino stamp.

“I am in love with the gorgeous color combinations that Kate and I dreamed up for this collection,” Heather Taylor says. “They each feel like a fresh take on summer classics.” And, indeed, they have warm weather baked into their design DNA: tomato and blue, lemon and sand, emerald and sky, and navy and blue. Pleated and scalloped trim abound, as do mini, midi, and maxi stripes. Berry notes that while certain shades are punchy, they are always paired with a softer hue that keeps things grounded. “There’s a balance,” she says. “For example, the yellow adds a pop of color, but the sand blends in with other neutrals.” Below, get a primer on how we’d style each option and a look at the fresh drop.

Tomato and Blue

This duo is a perennial favorite color combination of Domino editors. For a dinner party, go playful and casual with a cascade of matching heirloom tomatoes as your centerpiece, Sabre flatware, and Helen Levi’s rainbow splatter dishes. Or follow Taylor’s lead: “Swapping out my older tea towels for these summery colorways will freshen up my kitchen for the season ahead,” she says.

Lemon and Sand

“The yellow and sand runner with the scalloped edge is a forever piece,” Taylor says. “It’s so chic and happy.” Berry adds that the pinkish color balances the citron in just the right way without going too beach club. Set peachy pinwheel plates on top for another take on stripes (as long as you vary the scale, you can never have enough).

Navy and Blue

“Blues are neutrals to me,” Berry states. This tonal pair lays a cool monochrome foundation that’s timeless yet of the moment. Pair it with some tomato and blue pieces—they actually share the same mid-blue tone—and add Georg Jensen Berandotte cutlery to instantly elevate basic barbecue fare.

Emerald and Sky

Taylor envisions leaving the emerald and sky runner on her outdoor table all summer long. While you can’t go wrong with green on green, add some hits of unexpected lilac—the actual flowers count!—and your afternoon oysters will never look better.

While everyone else was in the comments section of Jenna Lyons’s recent Instagram video debating if Brooklyn is “the city” or not, we were zeroed in on another detail. No, it’s not how close the RHONY star’s red fingernails were to her microplane, or any other unexpected touch Lyons is a fan of, but a little nook off to the left of her shiny brass countertops.

Tucked away in its own neatly sized home is a roll of paper towels, flush on both sides (we applaud the contractor here). If you’re planning a kitchen renovation or have the room to incorporate built-in storage without a full gut, it’s a smart way to save precious countertop or cabinet space. We like to think you could even remove the roll when guests are over and display knickknacks there instead; they wouldn’t even know it was meant for the latter.

The petite pocket got us thinking of all the discreet ways we’ve seen paper towels dealt with, whether that’s incorporated into cabinetry, nestled under a shelf, or installed beneath a shelf. Or you can go the opposite route entirely and just proudly put it on display.

Over the weekend, Leanne Ford announced that a home she renovated and designed in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, is now for sale. Inside the 1868 Victorian, which once belonged to a pastor in town, you’ll find a scrap marble backsplash, Ford’s new Semihandmade cabinets, and an epically good copper-lined fireplace. But she’s also selling it fully furnished, which means the new owner won’t have to lift a finger in the decorating department.

No worries if you’re not in the market for a new home, because we did a bit of sleuthing to ID some of the best furnishings in the house so that you can bring the signature Leanne Ford look home, no matter where you live.

The Entryway

Ford filled the home in her signature white-on-white color palette (the walls and floors are Shoji White by Sherwin-Williams), which means it can almost be tricky to spot the plaster pedestal side table she placed below the stairs. The seashell chandelier, however, is on full display.

The Living Room

Of course Ford put her marshmallowy Mellow chair and slipcovered sofa in the living room, with a vintage light fixture above to add a bit of contrast.

Primary Bedroom

In the sleeping space, Ford made things extra serene with a Noguchi lamp and bouclé seating too pretty to become a “clothes chair.”

The Office

We’re pretty sure that Ford filled the home office with vintage finds, like this woven chair, but we were able to scope out a new version that looks alarmingly like the original.

The Kitchen

Yes, you’ll spot Ford’s new Semihandmade cabinet fronts in the kitchen, but you’ll also see bronze sconces, which appear throughout the home, and her coupes that work just as well at cocktail hour as they do at dessert time.
